We’re pleased to introduce our new Placental Function Panel, developed to support the assessment of placental health in pregnant mares.

The panel measures:

  • Progesterone (P4)
  • Oestradiol-17β (E2)
  • E2:P4 ratio
Placental Ultrasound

Placental Ultrasound

Progesterone has been shown to increase, oestradiol to decrease, and the E2:P4 ratio to decrease in mares with placental dysfunction, including ascending placentitis (Fedorka et al., 2021). Our own research in UK Thoroughbred mares supports these findings (paper publication pending), and we’re now pleased to make this test commercially available.

Potential uses include:

  • Screening high-risk pregnant mares
  • Supporting the investigation of suspected ascending placentitis
  • Pre-surgery screening for elective procedures
  • Monitoring placental function following emergency surgery, such as colic surgery

The test is useful from 7 months’ gestation. Results should be interpreted alongside clinical signs, and with caution during the 5–7 days before foaling, when normal pre-partum hormonal changes occur.

The cost for this panel is £55 + VAT
