Overground endoscopy (OGE) is a technique used regularly by our team to diagnose airway problems that occur when a horse is working, as most conditions will be seen only when the horse is exercising. OGE is particularly useful for the diagnosis of abnormal respiratory noises, and for patients suffering from poor performance or taking a long time to recover following exercise.
Our sophisticated OGE systems are mounted underneath the horse’s saddle and connected to specialist endoscopes placed in the horse’s airway through the nostril. We are able to examine horses of any size or shape, providing they are familiar with having a saddle or roller fitted.
The examination can be easily integrated into the horse’s daily exercise routine, either at home, using our on-site manège at the hospital, or we can arrange for the examination to be performed on one of the gallops in Newmarket or Lambourn.
We have specialist surgeons with extensive experience in upper airway surgery and management, including newer techniques such as laryngeal re-innervation (nerve grafts), vocal fold restoration and endoscopic laser surgery.
