Rossdales Equine Hospital is working in partnership with Dynasplint® Systems, an American company, to supply and fit dynamic splints for the treatment of flexural and angular limb deformities in foals and young horses. We are pleased to offer this service to our own clients and to referring veterinary surgeons.
Dynasplints® are designed to supply a low-load prolonged duration stretch to joints and connective tissue. They are more flexible than rigid splints and allow normal movement of joints and tissue. Splints are adjusted to fit an individual animal and are then worn for a set period of time daily (usually 4-8 hours). The tension can be adjusted to suit each individual’s degree of contracture and rate of progress.
Over a number of breeding seasons, we have now successfully treated a number of foals with quite severe carpal contracture. We also have splints to treat fetlock contractures and severe carpal valgus. Dynamic splints are proving to be very successful for the treatment of flexural and angular limb deformities in foals.
