Colic is one of the most common equine veterinary emergencies.
Rossdales has signed up to be a Vet REACT Colic Champion, as part of the REACT Now to Beat Colic campaign devised by the British Horse Society and The University of Nottingham Vet School to help horse owners combat the life-threatening condition of colic.
Research by The University of Nottingham found that more than 90% of horse owners did not feel confident in spotting early signs of colic. The evidence-based research also found that colic accounts for one in three emergency veterinary call outs to horses. At least one in ten of these cases may be critical and up to 80% of these critical cases result in death or the horse being euthanised.
The ‘REACT’ acronym comes from the pointers on how to spot any early signs of colic:
R Restless or agitated
E Eating less or reduced droppings
A Abdominal pain
C Clinical changes
T Tired or lethargic
Vet REACT Colic Champions
The REACT campaign is all about how horse owners and vets can work together to make the best decision for each individual horse, from sharing information with owners about different types of colic, and how to recognise the clinical signs, to working with your vet to decide which options will be best for your horse.
By working together, a number of veterinary practices, including Rossdales, have signed up to be Vet REACT Colic Champions. A full list of those practices is available here. Throughout the year these practices will be helping to provide advice, presentations and resources on all issues related to colic to their clients.
For more information about the REACT campaign, see the BHS website.
