Our new state-of-the-art Qalibra Exceed Computed Tomography (CT) scanner at Rossdales Equine Diagnostic Centre is now available for imaging our equine patients.

The large 90cm bore of the scanner allows us to examine regions of the horse’s body that previously we were unable to scan. Scans can be completed in minutes and provide exquisitely detailed images.

In the standing, sedated horse, we are able to examine the head, upper neck and distal limbs.  Scanning the head and upper part of the neck aids in the diagnosis and treatment of dental and sinus problems, as well as evaluating patients who are showing signs of headshaking or have sustained a head trauma.  With the enhanced capability of the new machine, scanning of the distal limbs without the need for a general anaesthetic is both possible and hugely beneficial in the diagnosis of lameness caused by bone or soft tissue injuries or disease.

Under general anaesthesia, we can scan further regions including the entire neck, the equine thoracic spinal column, back, pelvis, sacroiliac and stifle joints, and proximal limbs.

CT scans are particularly useful for cases showing neck pain, unexplained lameness and neurological problems, and in which radiographs and ultrasound scans were inconclusive or normal.

If you are a referring vet or a horse owner and require more information about our new CT facilities and our full range of advanced diagnostic imaging modalities, please contact our imaging team on 01638 577754.  Our experienced clinicians will be pleased to advise on the most appropriate imaging modality on a case-by-case basis.
