This can be used as a non-specific test to assess the likelihood of a mare producing a foal with an incompatible blood group (ie at risk for neonatal isoerythrolysis).
The mare’s serum is screened against 10 random red blood cell samples to look for agglutination. A positive response suggests there is an increased risk of neonatal isoerythrolysis if the foal is allowed to drink the mare’s colostrum. In this instance a jaundiced foal agglutination test should be carried out after foaling or if this is not possible the foal should be muzzled and provided with an alternative source of colostrum.
The test should be carried out within 1 – 2 weeks of foaling.
