Lorraine Palmer

BSc (Hons)

Lorraine joined Rossdales in 1997 as a research assistant to Dr Peter Rossdale and Dr Jenny Ousey. She graduated in Science from De Montfort University in 1999. For her final year dissertation she investigated osmotic tolerance limits of equine spermatozoa using a dual staining technique, and membrane water permeability in stallion spermatozoa using the stopped flow methodology.

Since 2000, she has worked with a number of Rossdales’ vets and broadened her research interests. At BEVA Congress 2008, Lorraine and former Rossdales veterinary surgeon Sarah Stoneham received the Sam Hignett award for the best Clinical Research presentation for their paper entitled ‘Case series of Thoroughbred weanling in the UK with Lawsonia intracellularis, clinical signs, treatment and serology’.

Lorraine additionally took part in the Clinical Research Outreach programme at the University of Cambridge Veterinary School, which enabled her to develop an antibody titre test for Rhodococcus equi. She also developed an expertise in polymerase chain reaction (PCR) techniques and was instrumental in creating the new PCR laboratory at the practice in 2009.

Lorraine very much enjoys being part of the overground endoscopy team and the stud team. She is a lifetime member of the Suffolk Horse Society and has been involved in several projects to promote breeding and health in this rare breed.

Lorraine has always worked with stallions, hence her main interest is stallion reproduction.
