Our internal medicine specialists provide routine and emergency referral services for cases requiring neurological investigation. Diagnostic (including radiography, CT and myelography) and surgical procedures are available for the investigation of spinal, intracranial and neuromuscular disorders.
Horses may be affected by a number of disorders of the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord), including bacterial, viral or parasitic infections, trauma, neurotoxins, electrolyte dysfunction and neurodegenerative and congenital conditions. They also may be affected by disorders of the peripheral nervous system (somatic and autonomic nervous system, serving the limbs and organs).
Indications for investigation and treatment include:
- ‘Wobbler’ syndrome
- Neuromuscular disorders
- Headshaking
- Inflammatory disorders of the central nervous system
- Spinal injuries
- Seizures and intracranial neoplasia (tumours)
