Services > Ambulatory Practice > Racehorses in Training

Racing is the lifeblood of Newmarket. We pride ourselves on building close partnerships with our training clientele and the veterinary surgeons in our racing team often become familiar 'yard faces', providing a comprehensive service that covers both routine and emergency work. This is backed up by the great depth of individual experience and expert knowledge that comes with being part of a large practice.
As with human athletes, racehorses can sometimes develop orthopaedic problems that may necessitate rest or treatment. Our veterinary surgeons play a key role in the prevention and early detection of injuries and by combining clinical skills with access to the latest mobile digital radiographic and ultrasonographic imaging equipment, can deal with many problems directly from their vehicles.
For many years Rossdale & Partners have been at the cutting edge of diagnosis of racehorse injuries, with bone scans (nuclear scintigraphy) revolutionising the detection of stress injuries over the last decade. This momentum has continued with our MRI unit and our CT unit at our hospital site in Exning. We strongly believe that it is important to foster a pioneering spirit to better understand and treat racehorse injuries, without losing sight of the practical needs of our training clientele.
Not all racehorse veterinary work is orthopaedic. There are many day-to-day issues that confront yards, from respiratory infections, to routine dentistry, to nutrition. Upper airway disease is a common cause of poor performance in racehorses and our clients can now benefit from the addition of the latest, state-of-the-art remote dynamic endoscopic system to complement the range of sophisticated diagnostic equipment already available to our clinicians. The VetMed remote endoscopic system enables the rapid and accurate diagnosis of a multitude of well recognised (and less well recognised) upper respiratory conditions.
