Gynaecology

We offer a full referral gynaecological service to Thoroughbred and non-Thoroughbred mares, which includes the following specialist services.

Video Hysteroscopy (inspection of the uterus via a hysteroscope) can be helpful as part of a routine barren mare investigation, especially when initial examination has failed to identify a cause for infertility. Although endometrial cysts are not usually a cause of infertility, their removal can be helpful in the gynaecological management of a mare and we offer removal hysteroscopically, using a diathermy wire loop technique. This service is undertaken by Andrew McGladdery in association with other reproductive specialists from the practice.

We are pleased to see mares with pneumovagina, urovagina and cervical problems, with a view to recommending and performing corrective surgical techniques. Restorative surgical techniques for rectovaginal fistulae and serious perineal lacerations are performed, usually with a good prognosis for return to breeding soundness.

Ultrasonographic Foetal Sexing is available to permit breeders to develop their marketing and breeding strategies.

Twin Pregnancies

Although mares can conceive twins, it is very unlikely that a twin pregnancy will proceed to two live births and often both foals are lost before birth. Fortunately twin pregnancies are nearly always resolved when identified at the first pregnancy scan. However, in the rare case where twins are not identified until much later, various options can be employed.
